Question 1 · Maths
Anika left the office at 2:00 p.m. for a 2-hour seminar. The drive took 1 h 30 min, and Anika reached the hall 20 minutes after the seminar had started. At what time did the seminar end?
- A.5:10 p.m.
- B.3:30 p.m.
- C.5:30 p.m.
- D.5:50 p.m.
Show answer
Answer: A. 5:10 p.m.
Going forward first, 2:00 p.m. plus 1 h 30 min reaches 3:30 p.m. Arriving 20 minutes LATE means the seminar had begun 20 minutes earlier, so go backwards from 3:30 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. Then run forward again for the 2 hours it lasted, which reaches 5:10 p.m.
Question 2 · Maths
A rectangle is 12 cm long and 2 cm wide. What is its perimeter, in cm?
- A.28
- B.48
- C.24
- D.14
Show answer
Answer: A. 28
Perimeter is the distance all the way round: 12 + 2 + 12 + 2 = 28 cm. It is 2 × (12 + 2), not 12 × 2 - that would be the area, which measures the space inside.
Question 3 · Maths
Diya puts aside 2675 paise each month. How much money is that altogether in 14 months?
- A.₹401 and 25 paise
- B.₹37450
- C.₹3745
- D.₹374 and 50 paise
Show answer
Answer: D. ₹374 and 50 paise
Multiply in paise first: 2675 × 14 = 37450 paise. A hundred paise make one rupee, so divide by a hundred to write it in rupees.
Question 4 · Science
A heavy box is dragged up to the same shelf along three ramps of different lengths. Along which ramp is the smallest force needed?
- A.The same force along all three
- B.The longest ramp
- C.Whichever ramp is widest
- D.The middle ramp
Show answer
Answer: B. The longest ramp
A longer ramp spreads the same climb over a greater distance, so each step of the journey lifts the box a little less and needs a smaller pull.
Question 5 · Science
Select the odd one out on the basis of the covering on the body.
- A.Lizard
- B.Crocodile
- C.Pigeon
- D.Rohu fish
Show answer
Answer: C. Pigeon
A pigeon's body is covered with feathers. Rohu fish, Lizard and Crocodile all agree on the basis named in the question, so the one that does not is the odd one out.
Question 6 · English
Choose the option that best completes the analogy. Brave : Courageous :: Smart : ____________
- A.Confident
- B.Curious
- C.Honest
- D.Clever
Show answer
Answer: D. Clever
'Clever' correctly completes the analogy. 'Confident' is often guessed instead, because 'confident' is a general self-belief, a different quality from being smart.
Question 7 · English
Someone says: "How short would you like it at the back?" Who is speaking?
- A.A barber
- B.A bus conductor
- C.A doctor
- D.A shopkeeper
Show answer
Answer: A. A barber
'How short would you like it at the back?' is said by a barber - not a doctor, because a doctor may look at your head but never cuts your hair.
Question 8 · Logical Reasoning
If doctor is called teacher, teacher is called farmer, farmer is called pilot and pilot is called doctor, then who grows our food?
- A.farmer
- B.pilot
- C.doctor
- D.teacher
Show answer
Answer: B. pilot
Answer the question first, then translate. The true answer is farmer. But nothing here keeps its own name: farmer is called pilot, so pilot is what you say. Reading the swap the other way round - asking what is called farmer - answers a question nobody asked.
Question 9 · Logical Reasoning
Each letter of the word ENVIRONMENT may be used only as often as it appears in it. Which of the following words CANNOT be formed from its letters?
- A.MENTOR
- B.INTERN
- C.INVENT
- D.MONITOR
Show answer
Answer: D. MONITOR
Strike the letters of each option off ENVIRONMENT one at a time. The answer runs out at the letter O, which ENVIRONMENT does not supply often enough, while the other three can be built completely.
Question 10 · Computers
Which one of these uses artificial intelligence?
- A.A torch that switches on with a button
- B.Traffic lights that change on a fixed timer
- C.An app that suggests videos you might like
- D.A washing machine running on a timer
Show answer
Answer: C. An app that suggests videos you might like
An app that suggests videos you might like uses AI: it learns from what you and others have watched before. A torch that switches on with a button is often thought to use AI because it is an electronic gadget, but being electronic is not the same as being intelligent. Suggesting is a prediction, not a rule someone wrote out in advance.
