  1. Question 1 · Maths

Which numeral shows the number 'eighteen'?

    1. A.8
    2. B.18
    3. C.81
    4. D.80
    Show answer

    Answer: B. 18

'eighteen' is written as 18 - 1 ten and 8 ones. 'eighty' (80) sounds alike but means 8 tens.

  2. Question 2 · Maths

At 7 a.m. the temperature was 12°C. It rose by 1°C every hour until 2 p.m., and then fell by 3°C every hour. What was the temperature at 6 p.m.?

    1. A.23°C
    2. B.8°C
    3. C.31°C
    4. D.7°C
    Show answer

    Answer: D. 7°C

    From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. is 7 hours, so the temperature rose 7 × 1 = 7°C, reaching 19°C. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. is 4 hours, so it fell 4 × 3 = 12°C. That leaves 7°C.

  3. Question 3 · Maths

    Box P holds 34, Q holds 43, R holds 79, S holds 97. Which order goes smallest to greatest?

    1. A.P, Q, R, S
    2. B.P, R, Q, S
    3. C.Q, P, R, S
    4. D.P, Q, S, R
    Show answer

    Answer: A. P, Q, R, S

Compare digit by digit from the left, never by how long a number looks: 34 < 43 < 79 < 97. Then read off whose box each one is, in that order.

  4. Question 4 · Maths

If PIG is written as GIP, how is BOX written?

    1. A.OBX
    2. B.XOB
    3. C.OXB
    4. D.GIP
    Show answer

    Answer: B. XOB

Find where each letter of the example went before coding anything (P goes to place 3, I goes to place 2, G goes to place 1). So the letters are written in the opposite order, last letter first. Doing the same to BOX gives XOB.

  5. Question 5 · Maths

2 : 4 :: 9 : 18 :: 6 : ? The sign :: means every pair follows the same rule, which turns the first number into the second. Which number goes in place of the question mark?

    1. A.36
    2. B.8
    3. C.3
    4. D.12
    Show answer

    Answer: D. 12

Find one rule that works for both example pairs, not just the first. Here the rule is: double the number (2 × 2 = 4, 9 × 2 = 18). Use it on the new number: 6 × 2 = 12.

  6. Question 6 · Maths

Kabir has four cards, each with a number written in words on it. Which card has the smallest number?

    1. A.six hundred nine
    2. B.six hundred ninety
    3. C.six hundred ninety-nine
    4. D.six hundred nineteen
    Show answer

    Answer: A. six hundred nine

Write each one in digits first: six hundred nine = 609, six hundred nineteen = 619, six hundred ninety = 690, six hundred ninety-nine = 699. So the smallest is six hundred nine. The pair to watch is six hundred nineteen and six hundred ninety: said aloud they are a syllable apart, and written down they are 71 apart.

  7. Question 7 · Logical Reasoning

Aisha has ₹300 and a friend has ₹118. Together they buy a pencil box for ₹38. How much money is left with them?

    1. A.₹456
    2. B.₹144
    3. C.₹380
    4. D.₹262
    Show answer

    Answer: C. ₹380

    First put the two amounts together: 300 + 118 = 418. Then take away 38: 418 − 38 = 380.

  8. Question 8 · Logical Reasoning

Anika has ₹150 to spend on 5 similar story books, with no money left over. What does one story book cost?

    1. A.₹37
    2. B.₹21
    3. C.₹30
    4. D.₹25
    Show answer

    Answer: C. ₹30

Share the ₹150 equally between the 5 story books: taking ₹30 away 5 times empties the purse exactly, so one story book costs ₹30.
