  1. Question 1 · English

My uncle gave ___ apple to my sister and ___.

    1. A.a ... I
    2. B.an ... me
    3. C.an ... I
    4. D.a ... me
    Show answer

    Answer: B. an ... me

We say: My uncle gave an apple to my sister and me. Apple begins with a vowel sound, so an; and after 'to my sister and', the receiver is me, never I.

  2. Question 2 · English

A ___ of ships sailed out to sea.

    1. A.Litter
    2. B.Flock
    3. C.Fleet
    4. D.Herd
    Show answer

    Answer: C. Fleet

We say: A fleet of ships sailed out to sea. 'Herd' does not fit, because herd is for animals, not ships.

  3. Question 3 · English

Fill in the blank with the word that fits the meaning. The library must be kept ______ so that everyone there can read in peace.

    1. A.quiet
    2. B.cold
    3. C.clean
    4. D.dark
    Show answer

    Answer: A. quiet

Reading in peace is spoilt by noise, so the rule the sentence gives is about sound. The sentence then reads: The library must be kept quiet so that everyone there can read in peace.

  4. Question 4 · English

Choose the option that best completes the analogy. Hot : Cold :: Big : ____________

    1. A.Fast
    2. B.Loud
    3. C.Small
    4. D.Old
    Show answer

    Answer: C. Small

'Small' correctly completes the analogy. 'Old' is often guessed instead, because 'old' describes age, a different quality from size, so it is not the opposite of big.

  5. Question 5 · English

You say: "See you soon!" When do you say this?

    1. A.When a cousin who has been staying with you goes home
    2. B.When your cousin arrives to stay
    3. C.When you will never meet the person again
    4. D.When you meet a friend in the morning
    Show answer

Answer: A. When a cousin who has been staying with you goes home

'See you soon!' is said when a cousin who has been staying with you goes home - not when your cousin arrives to stay, because arriving is welcomed, and this is said at a parting.

  6. Question 6 · English

Teacher: Well done on your test! What is the best thing to say?

    1. A.It was too easy anyway.
    2. B.Thank you, ma'am.
    3. C.Finally you noticed.
    4. D.I know I am smart.
    Show answer

    Answer: B. Thank you, ma'am.

The right thing to say is: 'Thank you, ma'am.' - 'I know I am smart.' does not fit, because it boasts instead of accepting the praise politely.

  7. Question 7 · English

Fill in the blank with the word that fits the meaning. Even after ten failures Meera did not lose ______ that she would win one day, and she tried once more.

    1. A.anger
    2. B.courage
    3. C.hope
    4. D.fear
    Show answer

    Answer: C. hope

Trying once more after ten failures means she was still expecting to win, and the word for going on expecting a good thing is the one the blank needs. The sentence then reads: Even after ten failures Meera did not lose hope that she would win one day, and she tried once more.

  8. Question 8 · English

Which word means the opposite of Friendly?

    1. A.Quiet
    2. B.Unfriendly
    3. C.Shy
    4. D.Lonely
    Show answer

    Answer: B. Unfriendly

Unfriendly means the opposite of Friendly. Shy is often guessed instead, because a shy person can still be friendly underneath, just quiet at first.
