  1. Question 1 · English

What does the phrasal verb 'Turn down' mean?

    1. A.to raise the volume or to arrive somewhere
    2. B.to refuse an offer, or to lower the volume
    3. C.to become or transform into something
    4. D.to result in a particular way
    Show answer

Answer: B. to refuse an offer, or to lower the volume

'Turn down' means to refuse an offer, or to lower the volume. To raise the volume or to arrive somewhere is often guessed instead, because 'turn up' means this - the opposite idea.

  2. Question 2 · English

Someone says: "I am so sorry to hear that." What is the speaker doing?

    1. A.Agreeing with someone
    2. B.Refusing politely
    3. C.Showing sympathy
    4. D.Apologising
    Show answer

    Answer: C. Showing sympathy

Saying 'I am so sorry to hear that.' is showing sympathy - it is not apologising, because the sorry is for the hearer's trouble, not for anything the speaker did.

  3. Question 3 · English

Which of the following is correctly punctuated: 'the dog wagged its tail'?

    1. A.The dog wagged its tail.
    2. B.The dog wagged its tail
    3. C.The dog wagged it's tail.
    4. D.the dog wagged its tail.
    Show answer

Answer: A. The dog wagged its tail.

'The dog wagged its tail.' is correctly punctuated and capitalised. 'The dog wagged it's tail.' is not right, because it's always means it is - the ownership word its takes no apostrophe.

  4. Question 4 · English

Which modal verb expresses a polite offer, a past habit, or a hypothetical action?

    1. A.Will
    2. B.Should
    3. C.Could
    4. D.Would
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Would

'Would' expresses a polite offer, a past habit, or a hypothetical action. 'Will' is often guessed instead, because 'will' expresses a more certain future action, not a hypothetical one.

  5. Question 5 · English

The kitten hid ___ the bed.

    1. A.At
    2. B.On
    3. C.Of
    4. D.Under
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Under

We say: The kitten hid under the bed. 'On' does not fit, because 'on' the bed is in plain sight - a hiding kitten goes below it.

  6. Question 6 · English

Read this sentence, printed in parts. "My mother made me" / "to clean my room" / "before I could go out to play." Which part has a mistake in it? Choose "No error" if the whole sentence is correct.

    1. A.No error
    2. B."before I could go out to play."
    3. C."My mother made me"
    4. D."to clean my room"
    Show answer

Answer: D. "to clean my room"

Go through the sentence part by part. The trouble is in "to clean my room", because after 'made me' the verb stands bare, so it is 'clean my room', with no 'to'. Put right, the whole sentence reads "My mother made me clean my room before I could go out to play.".

  7. Question 7 · English

Read this carefully. SOCIETY NOTICE Water supply will remain off on Tuesday from 10 am to 4 pm for tank cleaning. Residents are advised to store water in advance. Drinking water tankers will stand near Gate 2 from noon to 2 pm. The lift will work as usual. - Secretary A resident needs drinking water at 3 pm on Tuesday. What does the notice offer?

    1. A.Nothing then - the tankers leave at 2 pm
    2. B.Water from the lift room
    3. C.The normal supply
    4. D.A tanker at Gate 2
    Show answer

Answer: A. Nothing then - the tankers leave at 2 pm

At 3 pm both windows have closed on them: the supply returns only at 4, and the tankers left at 2 - which is exactly why the notice says store in advance.

  8. Question 8 · English

Read this sentence, printed in parts. "Meera has been" / "learning the violin" / "for she was seven years old." Which part has a mistake in it? Choose "No error" if the whole sentence is correct.

    1. A."for she was seven years old."
    2. B."learning the violin"
    3. C."Meera has been"
    4. D.No error
    Show answer

Answer: A. "for she was seven years old."

Go through the sentence part by part. The trouble is in "for she was seven years old.", because a starting point in time takes 'since'; 'for' is for a length of time. Put right, the whole sentence reads "Meera has been learning the violin since she was seven years old.".
